Sailing programs available on Voyageur

anchored sailboat

The Voyageur crew join some friends on an adventure while Voyageur is still being constructed.

All courses, adventure and open sails are expedition style – meaning the crew/students are expected to take part in the daily routine of living on a boat:

  1. Sailing
  2. Standing watch
  3. Meal preparation
  4. Clean up
  5. Boat checks

There is a limit of 4 students/participants on the boat allowing for lots of individual attention and time to practice skills.

Prior to the start of any voyage with new crew members on board, we conduct an intensive safety at sea briefing with them. It is crucial that all crew members understand all safety procedures where equipment is and how to use it.

Adventure Sail
An adventure sail is exactly that – an adventure on the water. It involves a mix of challenging sails with kayaking, hiking and cycling. We will sail to particular destinations and then use the boat as our base camp as we continue to explore by other means.

Even though these are not certification courses, teaching and learning is at the forefront of our trips. No matter what your skill level, you will find these trips challenging. Most of the adventure sails will involve at least one overnight passage.
See individual trip descriptions for full details of the adventure
There are no prerequisites for an adventure sail.

It is possible to treat an adventure sail as a certification course (CYA Basic or Intermediate) if there is more than one crew that wishes to do this and prior arrangements have been made with Voyageur Sailing in writing. There is a $200.00 up charge over the course fee to cover course materials, exam, certification, and administration costs.

Certification Courses (Canadian Yachting Association)
We offer CYA certification courses in Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Cruising as well as Coastal Navigation. Your Canadian Yachting Association certification is recognized around the world by charter companies and international sailing organizations

Intermediate Cruising
This standard sets out that the student is able to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sailing yacht of 8-12 meters in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. Emphasizes on-the-water skills. This is the recommended minimum qualification for bareboat chartering.
The standard is broken down into on water skills and ashore knowledge. The full description of the standard is available on the CYA website. (Click the link on our home page)
Many of our Intermediate Courses are 2 weeks long. On these courses we are able to expand the curriculum to include:

  1. Basics of electronic navigation using
    1. Radar
    2. GPS
    3. Chart plotter
  2. Sailing with a cruising spinnaker
  3. Sail repair
  4. Chartering basics
  5. Choosing a sailboat – sailboat design

It is also possible to complete your CYA Coastal Navigation Standard while on a 2 week Intermediate course. This must be arranged in writing with Voyageur Sailing prior to registering. There is a $350.00 up charge if you wish to do this and there must be more than one student taking part in it.  This is an intensive course and will severely restrict any down time that you may have to enjoy the surroundings and other activities

Advanced Cruising
The prerequisites for this course are listed on the CYA website. Proof of these prerequisites must be submitted with your application as well as log of your cruising history.

The standard sets out that the student must be able to act safely as a skipper and crew of a sailing vessel of 8-15 meters, operating by day and night in coastal or inland water in any weather.
The standard is broken down into ashore knowledge and afloat skills. The full description of the standard is available on the CYA website. (Click the link on our homepage)

All CYA certification courses have a written exam component to them. The theory component of the standard will be covered during the course by lecture, group discussion and discovery. The written exam must be completed before the last day of the course.
Students will be individually briefed at the midpoint of the course on their progress, and skills that need improvement.
A formal evaluation will be completed at the end of the course with each student.

Open Sail
These are usually passages between cruising areas and don’t lend themselves to a structured course. Actual departure and arrival times may vary depending on weather and other outside influences. Flexibility is the key here. We will however continue with the teaching of skills and provide the appropriate learning environment. There is no formal testing.

Since the duration of the passage will vary, it is difficult to set a fee for them. However it should be around $1.00 per mile.
Some previous sailing experience would be an asset when applying, but not absolutely required.

We are looking for people that are easy going, flexible and can adapt to changing conditions and circumstances.
